What is Laryngeal Inflammation? What Causes It?
Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx. Laryngitis that develops due to upper respiratory tract infections is called acute laryngitis, while laryngitis that develops due to causes such as allergies or reflux is called chronic laryngitis.
Laryngitis usually lasts less than a few weeks and goes away on its own.
However, in cases where symptoms persist for more than 3 weeks, it is necessary to consult an otolaryngologist for the necessary controls. The most common causes of laryngitis can be listed as follows:
- Upper respiratory tract infections,
- A bacterial infection that develops in the trachea, bronchi or lungs,
- Actions such as singing or shouting that cause excessive strain on the vocal cords,
- Reflux
In addition to all these, laryngitis can also occur due to conditions such as sprays used for asthma and COPD, allergic conditions, smoking cigarettes, recurrent sinusitis and fungal infections.
What are the Symptoms of Laryngitis?
When laryngitis occurs acutely, the most common symptoms are:
- hoarseness or bifurcation of the voice,
- dryness in the throat,
- coughing
- fever that is not high.
In the case of chronic laryngitis, symptoms can ocur such as:
- Difficulty swallowing,
- Feeling of a lump in the throat and pain,
- Wheezing breathing,
- The constant need to clear the throat,
- Weakness and fatigue,
- Cough
In some cases, symptoms such as swollen lymph nodes, tremors and, rarely, slurred speech may occur. Symptoms are usually not singular and several different symptoms may present together.
