The nasal flesh, also called the turbinate, is located 2 cm behind the nose. Its function is to warm, filter, and regulate the air. It has a very important role in regulating respiratory functions.

The nasal meatus is located 3 on each side of the nose and is called inferior, superior, and middle turbinates. The growth of nasal concha can bring many problems, especially respiratory problems.

What is Nasal Flesh Growth? Why Does It Happen?

The nasal flesh fills with blood and swells, usually due to various allergens. This condition commonly occurs in the lower or middle turbinate. A condition such as growth in the upper turbinate is usually not encountered.

Growth in the nasal flesh can be acute or chronic.

Acute nasal flesh growth can usually develop due to seasonal changes, stress, various medications, allergic conditions such as dust or mold, and hormonal changes during pregnancy.

Chronic nasal flesh growth may develop due to seasonal changes and severe allergies, sinusitis and similar chronic nasal infections, air pollution, nasal bone curvature deviation, and cigarette smoke.

What are the Symptoms of Nasal Flesh Growth?

Nasal flesh growth most commonly manifests itself with nasal congestion. At the same time, dry mouth or throat and bad breath may also occur due to nasal congestion. Other common symptoms of nasal flesh growth are as follows:

  • Prolonged and persistent nasal congestion,
  • Smelling problems,
  • Runny nose,
  • Feeling pain or pressure in the forehead or around the eyes, or having mild facial pain,
  • Snoring,
  • Feeling full inside the nostrils.

Apart from all these, symptoms such as throat infections, feeling tired waking up, chronic pharyngitis, cough, nasal discharge, or sinus diseases can also be seen due to nasal flesh enlargement.

How is nasal flesh enlargement treated?

Treatment of nasal flesh enlargement is determined depending on the cause of the swelling of the nasal flesh. Different methods such as a medical device called a nasal speculum, endoscopy, tomography or MRI can be applied. The treatment methods that can be applied are as follows:

  • If the problem is seasonal allergies, medications are used to reduce the effects of allergies,
  • In cases such as allergic rhinitis or nasal infections, nasal decongestants are used,
  • Although cortisone nasal sprays are effective for treatment, long-term use is not recommended.

In cases where the above treatment methods do not work, it is decided to reduce the nasal flesh with surgery. The first methods that can be applied are radiofrequency or laser treatment. However, this method does not work in cases where the nasal flesh swells too much. Therefore, with a procedure called turbinate resection or reduction, some of the bone under the nasal meatus and some of the tissue around the nasal meatus are removed.
