Sometimes the operations performed may not yield the desired results and a second operation may be required. As a matter of fact, if problems related to the patient's expectations or problems related to the aesthetic and functional structure arise after the rhinoplasty operation, a second operation is required to fix them.

What is Revision Rhinoplasty?

Revision rhinoplasty, secondary rhinoplasty or correction rhinoplasty is performed to eliminate the undesirable results of previously performed and failed operations.

For 5 to 15% of all rhinoplasty procedures, a revision rhinoplasty is necessary.  The necessity of revision rhinoplasty operation can be examined in 4 different categories:

  • There is no aesthetic problem in the nose, but the result is not what the patient wants.
  • Small irregularities on the back of the nose or an asymmetrical appearance at the tip of the nose are called minor problems. Minor corrections are required and can usually be corrected in 30 to 40 minutes.
  • If there are problems affecting nasal breathing along with asymmetry and irregularities in the nose, these are called moderate problems.
  • If there is deterioration or loss of nasal cartilage and bone structure, as well as asymmetry or deformities that adversely affect breathing, these are considered major problems. Moderate and major problems may take between 3 and 6 hours depending on the problem.

The necessity of revision rhinoplasty operation may develop depending on the patient's condition as well as the experience of the surgeon. Therefore, the choice of surgeon is of great importance in this type of aesthetic operation.

Why is Revision Rhinoplasty Performed?

Revision rhinoplasty may be necessary for many reasons. We can list some of these reasons as follows:

  • The tip of the nose may have a tight and narrow appearance, a wide or asymmetrical appearance, and a drooping, short or raised appearance.
  • The nostrils may have enlarged and gained an asymmetrical appearance.
  • Respiratory problems may have developed due to the collapse of the side walls of the nose.
  • The arch on the back of the nose may not be removed as desired,
  • Nasal collapse of the nose may have occurred due to insufficient or excessive removal of the cartilage arch.

The occurrence of all these problems is usually due to the surgeon not being experienced enough. Of course, unrealistic expectations of the patient, nasal trauma in the patient after the operation, or the surgeon's overly ambitious result may also cause results that require revision rhinoplasty.

In order for the rhinoplasty operation to be successful and to avoid the need for revision rhinoplasty operation, it is important to consider the following points:

  • Accurate and complete determination of the problems and procedures to be performed before the operation,
  • The surgical techniques to be used are correctly determined,
  • Full understanding of patient expectations and demands,
  • Considering all structural features of the patient, including the skin structure, when planning the operation,
  • Proper management of the healing process after surgery, preventing problems such as infection and trauma.

If you work with an expert surgeon and all these points are taken into consideration, rhinoplasty can be successful without the need for revision rhinoplasty. You can also request digital proof from the doctor in order to be aware of the post-operative appearance.
